Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical component of the cannabis sativa plant. This chemical component has been widely studied, and researchers have discovered that it posses a host of health benefits. And interestingly, it is not only human beings that can benefit from CBD; studies have shown that animals too can benefit from using it. Although CBD can treat or help manage the symptoms of many illnesses. It has been proven that CBD is very useful in treating epilepsy. Health authorities have approved CBD for the cure of seizures which are triggered by epilepsy. Studies in the United States have revealed that CBD has anti-convulsant proprieties which makes it one of the best medicines to treat epilepsy.
The Food and Drug Administration of the US (FDA) have proved the first CBD-based drug for the treatment of seizures triggered by epilepsy. The FDA approval of Epidiolex made history because it is the first CBD-based drug to be approved in US history. As you know, cannabis has been illegal in the US and around the world for decades.
Epidiolex is manufactured by GW Pharmaceuticals, a company based in the United Kingdom. GW Pharma is not new to producing drugs with CBD and other components of cannabis. The FDA approved Epidiolex for the treatment of two rare types of epilepsy known as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. These two rare forms of epilepsy typically affect small children two years and older. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome are characterized by uncontrollable seizures that can have severe consequences in children. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome also causes developmental delays in children.
The FDA approved Epidiolex after clinical studies showed that this CBD-based drug could drastically reduce the number of seizures that children suffering from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome experience. These seizures usually are hard to control with other medications. Health authorities say these seizures can have a devastating impact on the quality of life of children suffering from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
“The difficult-to-control seizures that patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome experience have a profound impact on these patients’ quality of life,” said Billy Dunn, M.D., director of the FDA’s Division of Neurology Products.
“In addition to another important treatment option for Lennox-Gastaut patients, this first-ever approval of a drug specifically for Dravet patients will provide a significant and needed improvement in the therapeutic approach to caring for people with this condition.”
Many people have also turned to CBD to treat seizures in the pets that suffer from other forms of epilepsy. Just like in humans, CBD can also help animals such as birds, cats, and dogs. There are CBD products on the market made for pets. Health officials advise that before buying any CBD product and giving it to your pet, it is best to consult with a vet. And it is also important to remember that CBD products which are made for human beings tend to be very concentrated and may be too much for pets to handle.
